EmpowerED Learner Strand
The EmpowerED Learner Strand leverages academic competencies while also investing in the transformative influence that occurs when the WHOLE student is empowered. When educators and students learn in environments of wellbeing which support socio-emotional needs, healthy thoughts and the capacity to develop self-care, everyone thrives!
When we view learning and growth with the acknowledgement that wellbeing, behavior and socio-emotional needs are inextricably tied together, learning begins to flow and becomes fun. Empowered learners not only learn content deeply, they also engage in inquiry about who they are as learners, how they can take care of their needs anywhere, anytime and how they can connect to a larger purpose to help make the world a better place.
What is SEL?
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
TheEmpowerEDLearner Strand leverages not only academic competencies but also integrates competencies regarding self-awareness, social-awareness,
self-management and empathy.
Mindfulness is the cultivation of moment-to-moment awareness. Mindfulness offers students and educators a centering approach which creates more calm and concentration in school and beyond. In a healthy manner, mindfulness helps practitioners successfully respond to difficult thoughts and feelings which could have otherwise caused stress and anxiety to impede learning.
The EmpowerED Learning Strand offers a systematic approach to introduce mindfulness schoolwide. Additionally, individual educators and students become equipped with practical tools which enhance learning outcomes today and for a lifetime.
Wellness and Neurobiology
Students who feel mentally and physically healthy tend to perform better in school. Educators who feel mentally and physically healthy tend to perform better for students. Schools that wisely invest in proactive systems and practices related to the brain create learning environments which address the totality of student needs.
The EmpowerED Learning Strand offers educators practical tools to help students regulate their nervous systems, introduce self-care strategies and integrate their brains, bodies and minds in the learning process. As students and educators continue to practice wellness strategies which prime the brain for learning, positive outcomes naturally arise in the realms of academics, socio-emotional needs and behavior.
Teacher teams need practical tools to apply immediately when addressing behavior and school culture. As we expand our capacity to meet and support student needs, we are propelled to look through a trauma-informed lens that helps us shift from wondering “what is wrong” with our students to “what happened to” them.
Through thoughtful analysis, teams will be able to strategically implement action plans to not only meet student needs but to empower them with the tools to meet their own emotional, cognitive and behavioral needs. Educators will learn how to empower students to develop tools of self-care, self-regulation and positive behavior.
