In Ms. Ugo’s 7th grade math class in IS 34 in Staten Island, students are providing peer feedback using the co-constructed success criteria.

During the peer assessment time, Ms. Ugo pulls a small group based on common misconceptions showing how to use class time for targeted direct instruction while the rest of the class provides feedback for peers based on a pre-test.

Students in the small group are empowered to lead the discussion based on their understanding of the math concept and the challenges they had. Students speak to the mistakes they made and how they can correct them.

Through the challenges they faced, students were able to discuss how they know they are successful. Students ask questions of each other and carry on a conversation about the concepts against success criteria.
